Paints - What is it?

PAINT



Paint is any liquid, liquifiable, or mastic composition which after application to a substrate in a thin layer is converted to an opaque solid film.

Different types and grades of paint provide different application and resistance properties, depending upon the kinds and levels of ingredients used to create the paint. In turn, the properties of a paint determine the general quality of the coating. Some of the many paint properties affected by the ingredients in the paint are:


In general terms, all paints have four basic components which impact these properties. These components are:

PIGMENTS
Provide color and hiding; some are used to impart bulk at relatively low cost

BINDER
"binds" the pigment together, and provides film integrity and adhesion
LIQUID
(or the "carrier")provides desired consistency and makes it possible to apply the pigment and binder to the surface being painted

ADDITIVES
low-level ingredients that provide specific paint properties such as mildew resistance, defoaming and good flow and leveling

Why a High Quality in Paint Means High Value?

A good quality paint goes on faster and easier.

  • Good hiding and flow means the paint will go on with less brushing, less retouching, etc.

  • You may need less coats to achieve good hiding and an attractive uniform appearance.

  • Less spattering can mean faster, easier cleanup.

For exterior work, the cost per year is lower with a top quality paint. If the surface is properly prepared and you use the right tools, you’ll need to repaint less often and there will be less maintenance. You probably won’t have mildew to remove, nor should you have to worry about chalking, cracking, etc.

For interior work, you should expect a top quality paint to last longer and give you more value. A quality paint resists dirt and staining better, and stands up to repeated cleaning better than an "economy" paint.

Goes on smoothly and evenly, without showing brush or roller marks.
Minimal spattering during application.
More hiding power, so it will require less touch-up and, possibly, fewer coats.
Surfaces have less tendency to stick to each other, so windows, doors and other freshly painted surfaces won't bond to one another.

Better resistance to dirt and stains, which facilitates cleaning and maintenance.



Levels of Gloss
The sheen of a paint is the amount of light reflected by the surface of a paint finish.

There are four basic sheens: flat, satin, semi gloss and gloss.


Flat Paints exhibit non-reflective properties providing a matte finish. This finish helps hide surface imperfections, and is normally used for ceilings and walls in areas not subjected to a lot of wear and tear, dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms not used by small children.


Satin Finish also know as eggshell finish, provides a soft luster sheen similar to that of an eggshell. A satin finish provides a harder surface finish which is more durable and more stain resistant than a flat finish. This durability makes satin paint a good choice for walls in children's rooms, hallways, stairways and family rooms.


Semi gloss Paints are very durable, they are easier to clean, and are more stain resistant than satin finish paints. Semi gloss paints are most often used on heavy wear surfaces or areas that are frequently cleaned such as kitchens and bathrooms. Semi gloss paint is also used on wood trim and cabinets.


Gloss Paint is a harder, more durable, more stain resistant paint finish. It is easier to clean than all the other paint finishes. Gloss finishes generally make surface imperfections more noticeable. Gloss finishes are the best choice for heavy wear areas like kitchens, bathrooms, furniture and cabinets, floors, stairs, handrails, high traffic doors and trim.

What are the advantages of flat and lower sheen paints?
  • They provide even light reflection, to give the surface a softer, more uniform look.
  • They don't highlight surface imperfections like higher sheen paints, so they usually don't require as much surface preparation (like patching, texturing or sanding) prior to painting.
  • They are much less likely to show 'lap marks', so they are generally easier to apply and touch-up than higher sheen paints. (When one painted section dries before the next section is painted, the two sections won't flow together into a uniform film, resulting in a 'lap mark'.)
  • They don't need to be sanded or deglossed before repainting, unlike higher sheen paints.


What are the disadvantages of flat and lower sheen paints?

  • They are less stain and scuff resistant than higher sheen paints, so they should not be recommended for high-traffic areas or on surfaces that will be handled, washed or scrubbed frequently.
  • They are less washable and less moisture resistant than higher sheen finishes, so they are not the best choice for areas that are exposed to high humidity levels, or on surfaces that will be washed frequently.


What are the advantages of higher sheen paints?

  • They have better stain resistance, so they resist dirt pick-up and stay cleaner longer.
  • They have better scuff and wear resistance, so they're good for high traffic areas and on surfaces that are handled, washed or scrubbed frequently.
  • They have better moisture resistance, which makes them ideal for surfaces and areas that are frequently exposed to high humidity levels.
  • They have a smooth, bright, more lustrous finish that some people prefer.


What are the disadvantages of higher sheen paints?

  • They tend to highlight any surface imperfections, so more surface preparation (like patching, texturing or sanding) will usually be needed before painting.
  • They are harder to touch-up than lower sheen paints, because the higher sheen tends to highlight the slightly raised surface of the film where the touch-up was done.
  • They usually need to be sanded, deglossed or primed prior to repainting, to ensure good adhesion of the new paint.

Different types of paints

There are two types of paints used today, latex and alkyd. Alkyd paint is also known as oil-based paint. Latex provides an excellent finish, while being an easier paint to use. Latex paint cleans up with soap and water, dries quickly, has less odor, is non-flammable, easy to touch up, they remain more flexible and allow moisture to evaporate through the film thus reducing blistering, cracking and peeling.
Inexpensive latex paints use softer vinyl resins (binders) and more water in the formulation while the more durable of the latex paints use 100% acrylic resins and less water. The term "Enamel" is normally associated with paints that have some gloss to the finish. Enamels are formulated with higher concentrations of resin as they are intended to be subjected to more wear and tear. Hy-Tech ceramics enable Hy-Tech to produce flat finish paints that have the same durability as shiny traditional "enamel paints.


Should I use latex or oil paint?

Latex paint is a great choice for most instances, but there are still situations where a solvent-based paint may be preferable. To help decide which is best in your case, consider the following:


What are the advantages of latex paints?

  • They have a less objectionable odor, which makes them good for repaints and painting in occupied areas, where solvent odor is an issue.
  • They clean up with soap and water; there's no need to work with hazardous and/or flammable solvents, and no used solvent to dispose of afterwards.
  • Latex paints dry faster, and can be recoated sooner; this makes them a good choice for painting in occupied areas, where someone might touch or brush up against the freshly painted surface.
  • Latex paint binders hold up better in sun-exposed areas, because they're more resistant to UV (ultraviolet) radiation; alkyd and oil binders will absorb more of this radiation and break down more quickly.
  • Latex paint films are less prone to yellowing over time, especially with white, light off-white and pastel colors.
  • Latex paint films are more breathable; they allow small amounts of water vapor to pass through the film, so the chance of blistering is reduced. This is especially important when the surface being painted is slightly damp.
  • Latex paint films have better gloss and color retention, so they'll keep a 'like-new' appearance longer.
  • Latex paint films are more elastic, so they can expand and contract with the substrate better; this means they'll be less likely to crack and peel over time.


What are the advantages of solvent-based paints?

  • Solvent-based paints are less sensitive to application conditions, which means they can be applied over a wider temperature and humidity range (however, the surface must still be dry for good adhesion).
  • Solvent-based paints can be applied in a thicker coat with less sagging, for better coverage.
  • Solvent-based paints have better flow and leveling characteristics, so they'll dry to a smoother finish, with fewer brush or roller marks (this advantage is reduced somewhat for low V.O.C. alkyd paints).
  • Solvent-based paints provide better surface penetration, especially on weathered wood; this means improved adhesion and better surface protection.
  • Solvent-based paints have better adhesion on smooth surfaces.
  • Solvent-based paints initially have a sharper, richer-looking gloss (however, they also tend to lose their gloss faster over time).
  • Solvent-based paints initially provide a harder, more durable finish (however, they also tend to become more brittle over time).

Steps to teach how to paint

Step number one: Prepare the surface properly

  • Good paint performance depends on good paint adhesion, and paint adheres best to surfaces that are clean and sound. Before picking up a brush or roller, it's important to make sure the surface is "inviting" to the paint.

  • Accumulated dirt, dust and grime should be removed from walls, ceilings and trim with a detergent-water solution. After washing, the surfaces should be thoroughly rinsed with water and allowed to dry completely.
  • Next, a putty knife should be used to fill cracks, holes and other surface imperfections with either spackling compound or a quality acrylic caulk. If spackling is used, after it is dry it should be sanded smooth and flush with the surface; caulk should be smoothed and feathered as it is applied.
  • Finally, if walls or ceilings have water stains or other serious discol-oration, then before painting, it may be necessary to coat them with a latex or oil-based stain-blocking primer to prevent the stains from bleeding through the new paint.


Step number two: Use only top quality paint

Top quality paint
  • Compared with ordinary interior paints, top quality finishes are much easier to work with and offer superior long-term performance.

  • In terms of application benefits, top quality paints won't spatter or tend to show brush marks. And since they hide better than ordinary paints, a single coat is often sufficient to give a great looking paint job and save on time, labor and cost.

  • Top quality interior paints also are tougher and more durable than ordinary interior paints, according to experts at the Paint Quality Institute. They resist fading, yellowing and staining. And even if they do get spotted or stained, discoloration can often be washed off without damaging the finish.


Step number three: Invest in quality tools

  • To get the most from top quality interior paint, it should be applied with high quality brushes and rollers. Not only will they apply the paint more evenly, but they will also make the job more effortless

  • The best brushes tend to be well balanced, hold a lot of paint and apply the paint evenly. Look for brushes with tightly packed bristles and test them for springiness. And be sure they don't fan too much.

  • When applying the more popular latex or water-based interior paints, it's important to use brushes and rollers with synthetic bristles and covers. They'll maintain the proper stiffness and keep their shape regardless of the amount of water they're exposed to.
    Most oil-based or alkyd paints can be applied with brushes and rollers made either of synthetic or natural materials.
    Remember. interior painting can be as simple as one-two-three. But there are no shortcuts. Good surface preparation, top quality paint and high quality tools are all essential to get the best

Paint - Defects

Defects



* Starting at the ceiling, cut in 2 inch strip with a brush. Continue with the brush to cut in 2 inch strips in corners, around windows, doors, cabinets and baseboards. Note - there are tools available at your paint retail outlets that help make this "edging" job easier. Other "tricks" include sliding the roller cover off the holder slightly so the rollers edge gets closer to ceiling, window or door.

WallsSwitch to a roller and paint in a vertical direction using a zigzag pattern. Push the roller upward on the first stroke, then form an "M" pattern to evenly distribute the paint on the roller. (working in 3 ft sections is recommended). Fill in the "M" pattern without reloading the roller until you have complete coverage of the area. Continue with this approach until the wall is finished. Touching up spots you missed when the paint is wet will help minimize sheen potential sheen differences.

Most manufacturers recommend that when you finish one wall, make sure you have enough paint to complete the next entire wall. Starting with another can of paint in the middle of a wall can result in slightly different colors, which will be perceptible side by side, but not wall to wall.

Common Defects and Problem

Interior















Blistering


Bubbles resulting from localized loss of adhesion, and lifting of the paint film from the underlying surface.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Applying oil-based or alkyd paint over a damp or wet surface.
* Moisture seeping into the home through the exterior walls (less likely with latex paint).
* Exposure of latex paint film to high humidity or moisture shortly after paint has dried, especially if there was inadequate surface preparation.

SOLUTION:

* If blisters do not go all the way down to the substrate: Remove blisters by scraping, and sanding, and repaint with a quality acrylic latex interior paint. If blisters go down to the substrate: Remove the source of moisture, if possible. Repair loose caulking; consider installing vents or exhaust fans. Remove blisters as above, remembering to prime before applying the top coat.

Blocking



Undesirable sticking together of two painted surfaces when pressed together (e.g., a door sticking to the jamb).

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Not allowing sufficient dry time for the coating before closing doors or windows.
* Use of low quality semigloss or gloss paints.

SOLUTION:

* Use top quality semigloss or gloss acrylic latex paint. Low quality latex paints can have poor block resistance, especially in warm, damp conditions. Follow paint label instructions regarding dry times. Acrylic latex paints generally have better early block resistance then vinyl latex paints or alkyd or oil-based paints; however, alkyds develop superior block resistance over time. Application of talcum powder can relieve persistent blocking.












Cracking/Flaking


The splitting of a dry paint film through at least one coat as a result of aging, which ultimately will lead to complete failure of the paint. In its early stages, the problem appears as hairline cracks; in its later stages, flaking occurs.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:
o Use of lower quality paint that has inadequate adhesion and flexibility.Overthinning or overspreading the paint.
o Inadequate surface preparation, or applying the paint to bare wood without first applying a primer.
Excessive hardening and embrittlement of alkyd paint as the paint job ages.

SOLUTION:
o Remove loose and flaking paint with a scraper or wire brush, sanding the surface and feathering the edges. If the flaking occurs in multiple layers of paint, use of a filler may be necessary. Prime bare wood areas before repainting. Use of a top quality primer and top coat should prevent a recurrence of the problem.














Mildew


Black, gray or brown spots or areas on the surface of paint or caulk.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Forms most often on areas that tend to be damp, or receive little or no direct sunlight (e.g., bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms).
Use of an alkyd or oil-based paint, or lower quality latex paint.
Failure to prime bare wood surface before applying the paint.
Painting over a substrate or coating on which mildew has not been removed.



SOLUTION:

* Test for mildew by applying a few drops of household bleach to the area; if it is bleached away, the discolorant is probably mildew. Remove all mildew from the surface by scrubbing with a diluted household bleach solution (one part bleach, three parts water), while wearing rubber gloves and eye protection. Rinse thoroughly. To protect against mildew, use a top quality latex paint, and clean when necessary with bleach/detergent solution. Consider installing an exhaust fan in high moisture areas.














Yellowing


Development of a yellow cast in aging paint; most noticeable in the dried films of white paints or clear varnishes.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Oxidation of alkyd or oil-based paint or varnish.
* Heat from stoves, radiators and heating ducts.
* Lack of light (e.g., behind pictures or appliances, inside closets, etc.).

SOLUTION:

* Top quality latex paints do not tend to yellow, nor does non-yellowing varnish. Alkyd paints, because of their curing mechanism, do tend to yellow, particularly in areas that are protected from sunlight.














Wrinkling


A rough, crinkled paint surface, which occurs when uncured paint forms a "skin."

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Paint applied too thickly (more likely when using alkyd or oil-based paints).
* Painting during extremely hot weather or cool damp weather, which causes the paint film to dry faster on top than on the bottom.
* Exposing uncured paint to high humidity levels.
* Painting over a contaminated surface (e.g., dirt or wax).

SOLUTION:

* Scrape or sand substrate to remove wrinkled coating. If using a primer, allow it to dry completely before applying top coat. Repaint (avoiding temperature/humidity extremes), applying an even coat of top quality interior paint.













Surfacant leaching


Concentration of water-soluble ingredients on the surface of a latex paint, typically on a ceiling surface in rooms that have high humidity (e.g., shower, bathroom, kitchen); may be evident as tan or brown spots or areas, and can sometimes be glossy, soapy or sticky.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* All latex paint formulas will exhibit this tendency to some extent if applied in areas that become humid (bathrooms, for example), especially in ceiling areas.

SOLUTION:

* Wash the affected area with soap and water, and rinse. Problem may occur once or twice again before leachable material is completely removed. When paint is applied in a bathroom, it is helpful to have it dry thoroughly before using the shower. Remove all staining before repainting.













Sagging


Downward "drooping" movement of the paint film immediately after application, resulting in an uneven coating.

POSSIBLE CAUSE:

* Application of a heavy coat of paint.
* Application in excessively humid and/or cool conditions.
* Application of overthinned paint.
* Airless spraying with the gun too close to the substrate being painted.

SOLUTION:

* If the paint is still wet, immediately brush out or re-roll to redistribute the excess evenly. If the paint has dried, sand, and reapply a new coat of top quality paint. Correct any unfavorable conditions: Do not thin the paint; avoid cool or humid conditions; sand glossy surfaces. Paint should be applied at its recommended spread rate; avoid "heaping on" the paint. Two coats of paint at the recommended spread rate are better than one heavy coat, which can also lead to sagging. Consider removing doors to paint them supported horizontally.













Foaming/Cratering


Formation of bubbles (foaming) and resulting small, round concave depressions (cratering) when bubbles break in a paint film, during paint application and drying.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Shaking a partially filled can of paint.
* Use of low quality paint or very old latex paints. ¥ Applying (especially rolling) paint too rapidly.
* Use of a roller cover with wrong nap length.
* Excessive rolling or brushing of the paint.
* Applying a gloss or semigloss paint over a porous surface.

SOLUTION:

* All paints will foam to some degree during application; however, higher quality paints are formulated so the bubbles break while the paint is still wet, allowing for good flow and appearance. Avoid excessive rolling or brushing of the paint or using paint that is more than a year old. Apply gloss and semigloss paints with a short nap roller, and apply an appropriate sealer or primer before using such paint over a porous surface. Problem areas should be sanded before repainting.

Exterior














Alligatoring


Patterned cracking in the surface of the paint film resembling the regular scales of an alligator.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Application of an extremely hard, rigid coating, like an alkyd enamel, over a more flexible coating, like a latex primer.
* Application of a top coat before the undercoat is dry.
Natural aging of oil-based paints as temperatures fluctuate. The constant expansion and contraction results in a loss of paint film elasticity.

SOLUTION:

* Old paint should be completely removed by scraping and sanding the surface; a heat gun can be used to speed work on large surfaces, but take care to avoid igniting paint or substrate. The surface should be primed with high quality latex or oil-based primer, then painted with a top quality exterior latex paint.














Peeling


Loss of paint due to poor adhesion. Where there is a primer and top coat, or multiple coats of paint, peeling may involve some or all coats.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Seepage of moisture through uncaulked joints, worn caulk or leaks in roof or walls.
* Excess moisture escaping through the exterior walls (more likely if paint is oil-based).
* Inadequate surface preparation.
* Use of lower quality paint.
* Applying an oil-based paint over a wet surface.
* Earlier blistering of paint (see Blistering).

SOLUTION:

* Try to identify and eliminate souce of moisture. Prepare surface by removing all loose paint with scraper or stiff wire brush, sand rough edges, and apply appropriate primer. Repaint with a top quality acrylic latex exterior paint for best adhesion and water resistance.















Fading


Premature and/or excessive lightening of the paint color, which often occurs on surfaces with sunny southern exposure. Fading/poor color retention can also be a result of chalking of the coating.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Use of an interior grade of paint for an outdoor application.
* Use of a lower quality paint, leading to rapid degradation (chalking) of the paint film.
* Use of a paint color that is particularly vulnerable to UV radiation (most notably certain bright reds, blues, and yellows).
* Tinting a white paint not intended for tinting, or overtinting a light or medium paint base.

SOLUTION:

* When fading/poor color retention is a result of chalking, it is necessary to remove as much of the chalk as possible (see Chalking). In repainting, be sure to use a quality exterior house paint in colors recommended for exterior use.













Dirt Pickup



Accumulation of dirt, dust particles and/or other debris on the paint film; may resemble mildew.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Use of a low quality paint, especially lower grades of satin or semigloss.
Soil splashing onto siding.
* Air pollution, car exhaust and flying dust collecting on house body and horizontal trim.

SOLUTION:

* Wash off all surface dirt before priming and painting, using a scrub brush and detergent solution, followed by a thorough rinsing with a garden hose. Heavier dirt accumulations may require the use of a power washer. While dirt pickup can't be eliminated entirely, top quality exterior latex paints typically offer superior dirt pickup resistance and washability. Also, higher gloss paints are more resistant to dirt pickup than flat paints, which are more porous and can more easily entrap dirt.














Mildew


Black, gray or brown areas of fungus growth on the surface of paint or caulk.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Forms most often on areas that tend to be damp, and receive little or no direct sunlight (walls with a northerly exposure and the underside of eaves are particularly vulnerable).
* Use of a lower quality paint, which may have an insufficient amount of mildewcide.
* Failure to prime bare wood before painting.
* Painting over a substrate or coating on which mildew has not been removed.

SOLUTION:

* Test to distinguish mildew from dirt by applying a few drops of household bleach to the discolored area; if it disappears, it is probably mildew. Treat the mildew by applying a mixture of water and bleach, 3:1, and leave on for 20 minutes, applying more as it dries. Wear goggles and rubber gloves. Then scrub and rinse the area. Apply an exterior latex primer, then a top-of- the-line exterior latex paint in flat, satin, semigloss or gloss finish, depending on the desired appearance.













Blistering


Bubbles resulting from localized loss of adhesion, and lifting of the paint film from the underlying surface.


POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Painting a warm surface in direct sunlight.
* Application of oil-based or alkyd paint over a damp or wet surface.
* Moisture escaping through the exterior walls (less likely with latex paint than with oil-based or alkyd paint).
* Exposure of latex paint film to dew, high humidity or rain shortly after paint has dried, especially if there was inadequate surface preparation.

SOLUTION:

* If blisters go down to the substrate: try to remove the source of moisture. Repair loose caulking; consider installing vents or exhaust fans. Remove blisters (see Below).
* If blisters do not go all the way down to the substrate: remove them by scraping, then sanding, prime bare wood and repaint with a quality latex exterior paint.













Wrinkling


A rough, crinkled paint surface occurring when paint forms a "skin."

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Paint applied too thickly (more likely when using alkyd or oil-based paints).
* Painting a hot surface or in very hot weather.
* Exposure of uncured paint to rain, dew, fog or high humidity levels.
* Applying top coat of paint to insufficiently dried first coat. ¥ Painting over contaminated surface (e.g., dirt or wax).

SOLUTION:

* Scrape or sand substrate to remove wrinkled coating. Repaint, applying an even coat of top quality exterior paint. Make sure the first coat or primer is dry before applying the top coat. Apply paints at the manufacturer's recommended spread rate (two coats at the recommended spread rate are better than one thick coat). When painting during extremely hot, cool or damp weather, allow extra time for the paint to dry completely.












Efflourescence/Motting


Crusty, white salt deposits, leached from mortar or masonry as water passes through it.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Failure to adequately prepare surface by removing all previous efflorescence.
* Excess moisture escaping through the exterior masonry walls from behind.

SOLUTION:

* If excess moisture is the cause, eliminate the source by repairing the roof, cleaning out gutters and downspouts, and sealing any cracks in the masonry with a high quality, water-based all-acrylic or siliconized acrylic caulk. If moist air is originating inside the building, consider installing vents or exhaust fans, especially in kitchen, bathroom and laundry areas. Remove the efflorescence and all other loose material with a wire brush, power brush or power washer; then thoroughly rinse the surface. Apply a quality water-based or solvent-based masonry sealer or primer, and allow it to dry completely; then apply a coat of top quality exterior house paint, masonry paint or elastomeric wall coating.













Cracking/Flaking



The splitting of a dry paint film through at least one coat, which will lead to complete failure of the paint. Early on, the problem appears as hairline cracks; later, flaking of paint chips occurs.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Use of a lower quality that has inadequate adhesion and flexibility.
* Overthinning the paint or spreading it too thin.Poor surface preparation, especially when the paint is applied to bare wood without priming.
* Painting under cool or windy conditions that make latex paint dry too fast.

SOLUTION:

* It may be possible to correct cracking that does not go down to the substrate by removing the loose or flaking paint with a scraper or wire brush, sanding to feather the edges, priming any bare spots and repainting.
* If the cracking goes down to the substrate remove all of the paint by scraping, sanding and/or use of a heat gun; then prime and repaint with a quality exterior latex paint.













Frosting


A white, salt-like substance on the paint surface. Frosting can occur on any paint color, but it is less noticeable on white paint or lighter tints. On masonry, it can be mistaken for efflorescence (see Efflorescence and Mottling).

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Forms mostly in protected areas (such as under eaves and on porch ceilings) that do not receive the cleansing action of rain, dew and other moisture.
* Use of dark-colored paints that have been formulated with calcium carbonate extender.
Application of a dark-colored paint over a paint or primer containing calcium carbonate extender.

SOLUTION:

* Frosting can be a stubborn problem. It often cannot be washed off readily. Moreover, the condition can recur even as a bleed-through when a new top coat is applied. In extreme cases, it can interfere with adhesion. The best remedy is to remove the frosting by wirebrushing masonry or sanding wood surfaces; rinse, then apply an alkyd-based primer before adding a coat of high quality exterior paint.












Surfactant Leaching


Concentration of water-soluble ingredients on latex paint, creating a blotchy, sometimes glossy appearance, often with a tan or brownish cast. More likely with tinted paints than with white or factory-colored paints.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

* Painting in cool, humid conditions or just before they occur. The longer drying time allows the paint's water-soluble ingredients - which would normally evaporate, or be leached out by rain or dew - to rise to the surface before paint thoroughly dries.
* Mist, dew or other moisture drying on the painted surface shortly after it has dried.

SOLUTION:

* Avoid painting in the late afternoon if cool, damp conditions are expected in the evening or overnight. If the problem occurs in the first day or so after the paint is applied, the water-soluble material can sometimes be rinsed off rather easily. Fortunately, even more stubborn cases will generally weather off in a month or so. Sufactant leaching should not affect the ultimate durability of the coating.

Why is surface preparation important?

Inadequate surface preparation is the biggest single reason why paint failures occur. Depending on the condition of the surfaces being painted, proper surface preparation might include cleaning, repairing, patching, sanding, masking and priming. Each of these steps are described below in greater detail, for both interior and exterior painting:


When should I repair, patch, sand and mask?

Note: If you're going to be doing any sanding, scraping or wirebrushing, it's best to use the appropriate safety equipment, like goggles, gloves, dust masks, etc.

* Check for rotting, degraded or otherwise damaged surfaces, and repair or replace where necessary; the paint needs a stable substrate for good adhesion.
* Old, weathered wood should be scraped, wirebrushed and/or sanded to remove loose wood fibers and create a sound substrate for better primer and paint adhesion.
* New wood should be sanded with a fine grit sandpaper; the sanding should be done with the grain, not against it. New wood surfaces should also be lightly sanded after priming, to remove any wood fibers that were raised by the primer.
* All surfaces to be painted should be checked for cracks, gaps, dents and holes; these areas should be patched with spackling paste or caulking. Be sure to check the following areas:
o Around window or door frames (these areas get a lot of wear and tear!).
o Where siding meets the foundation or masonry.
o Where the siding forms corner joints.
o Around vent ducts and other openings for plumbing, wiring, or cable.
* When using spackling paste, apply it so it's slightly higher than the surrounding surface. Once dry, sand the patched area so it's smooth and level with the surrounding surface.
* Check existing caulk and window glazing; remove sections that are inflexible, cracked or pulled away from the substrate, and replace them (be sure to clean these areas and let them dry before putting in new caulk or glazing).
* Check gutters and downspouts, and replace them if they're badly rusted. Otherwise, use a wire brush, scraper or power sander to remove any rust and/or loose paint. Then, use an all-purpose cleaner to remove any dirt, and rinse the surface thoroughly.
* Before painting over a surface that was previously painted with a glossy paint, use fine or medium grit sandpaper to scuff up and roughen the surface, so the paint will adhere (be sure to do all sanding in one direction; if a circular motion is used, the scratches may show through the topcoat). A chemical deglosser may also be used.
* If there's any flaking or peeling paint, it must be removed by sanding or scraping, so the paint will adhere. Where necessary, these areas should be patched and sanded so the surface is smooth and uniform. Start with a medium grit sandpaper and work to progressively finer grits until a smooth, uniform surface is obtained.
* If there are any rusty nail heads, remove the rust by sanding, countersink the nail heads, prime with a rust-inhibitive primer and apply spackle.
* Check masonry surfaces; wherever there's a crack, undercut it, wet it and apply a latex masonry caulk, or use a masonry patching compound. If necessary, use a wire brush to remove dirt, loose/peeling paint and loose masonry.
* After all the patching and sanding has been done, use a tack cloth, brush or broom to remove any dust from the surfaces to be painted.
* Next, use masking tape and paper or plastic to mask any items or surfaces that aren't going to be painted, like doorknobs, light fixtures, window panes, etc. The tape should be pressed firmly in place so the paint can't seep underneath.




When is priming necessary?

Some surfaces must be primed before painting, to ensure the best possible results. Primers are normally used for one or more of the following reasons:

* To fill and seal the pores in surfaces like bare wood or weathered masonry.
* To provide a smooth, even surface for the finish coat, especially for enamel topcoats.
* To cover the substrate, so the topcoat will hide better.
* To lock in stains from staining woods like cedar and redwood, and cover stains from water damage, knots and sap streaks.
* To bond to slick, shiny and other hard-to-paint surfaces, and create a surface the topcoat can adhere to.
* To provide corrosion resistance for metal substrates like iron, steel, aluminum and galvanized metal. In general, a primer should be used in the following situations:
o Primers should be applied over surfaces that have never been painted before, like new wood, masonry, and metal. On these surfaces, a prime coat will help create a uniform surface for the topcoat, for improved coverage, better adhesion, more uniform finish and easier touch-up.
o When repainting, primers are needed when a surface is weathered or when the surface has been stripped or worn down to the original substrate.
o Primers can also be used on hard-to-paint surfaces, where surface stains or poor paint adhesion may be a problem.

(Note: While primers are effective problem solvers, they can hide only so much. If a stain is caused by a leaky water pipe, for example, it's important to fix the leak before using a primer to conceal the stain. It's still important to properly prepare the surface, even if a primer is being used. This includes cleaning, patching, sanding, etc

This is the most common defect found in this method. It occurs when there is a loss of bond of the tile to the adhesive, making the tile loose and eventually letting it fall. This can cause grievous hurt on others if it falls from a high position.

The loosening of the bond can be linked mainly back to the preparation, before the wall tiles are placed, when certain criterion are reached, dislodgements are unlikely to occur. These criteria are:

  • Good preparation of the concrete background
  • Having thicker or equal coats of rendering
  • Ensuring that tiles are solidly bedded
  • Successful application of jointing material that would prevent water from loosening the tiles
  • Ensuring movement rates, rendering and background concrete are all equal

To rectify spoilt wall tiling, first, the damaged tiles have to be removed then replaced by those in good condition. Appropriate adhesive or mortar should be used to re-install the tiles, vetical and horizontal movement joints should be provided as well.

Another way to fix this is by injecting polymer resin between tiles, however if not carried out properly, this may cause tiles to pop out.

Chipped Tile

Chipped tiles would be tiles with cracks and a part of it had fallen off.

Chipped tile repair is easy if you have the right products and some skill. You need oil paint that matches the color of the tile, special primer and clear two-part marine epoxy. It is also a good idea to have some toothpicks handy.

The first step is to gather the needed materials for the job. You will need a small amount of oil-based primer/sealer, high gloss oil paint that matches the color of the tile exactly and a syringe of two-part clear marine epoxy.

The primer sealer can often be purchased at a hobby shop. They sell paints in small bottles very similar in size to fingernail polish. The finish paint will probably have to be mixed at a top-quality paint store that just sells paint. Hopefully you have a spare tile you can drop off to the paint store. If you give them a day or so, they can spend time when they are not busy to get a perfect color match.

Once you have all of the supplies, you can get to work. The first thing to do is clean the chipped area with soap and water and rinse with clear water. Use a hair dryer for several minutes to ensure the tile is completely dry. Even when you think it is dry, continue to blow warm air over the chipped area for 15 minutes. The exposed tile can soak up lots of water and it may take a while to wick out all of the moisture from the tile.

Once the tile is dry, use a very small brush and carefully apply some of the primer/sealer to just the chipped area of the tile. Do not get any on the upper glazed surface immediately adjacent to the chipped depression. Do not apply so much that you end up with a puddle of paint in the chipped area.

Once the color matches the surrounding part of the tile, then wait an additional 24 hours. The final step is mixing the two-part marine epoxy that will fill the chipped area so it is the same height as the surrounding glazed part of the tile. Be sure the marine epoxy is clear and that it says it is waterproof on the label.

Carefully squirt out equal amounts of each part of the epoxy onto a scrap of cardboard and mix it very well. I prefer to use a toothpick for this task. Be sure the chipped tile area is lighted very well so that you can see what you are doing.

Apply the epoxy with the tip of a toothpick being very careful to only get it in the chipped area. Carefully dab a small amount of epoxy at a time and add just enough so the top of the epoxy is level with the top of the tile. It usually takes an hour for the epoxy to fully set. Protect the epoxy from any foot traffic for a minimum of 24 hours.

Grout failure













Ceramic tile grout is available in several forms. Tile grouting requires the proper type and the proper mixture. Follow these tips and with a little grouting practice, you will get great results on your ceramic tile flooring or ceramic wall tile. Tile grout can be ruined by adding too much water when the grout is first mixed or while finishing the tile grout joints thus this is a common problem especially for places such as toilets.

Grouting ceramic tile is a skill.

The most common reasons grout crumbles and disintegrates with minimal force are water - too much water. Virtually all powdered wall and sanded floor grouts are made from Portland cement. Some grouts have extra additives such as powdered latex or acrylic modifiers that make them bond even better. You can also purchase liquid acrylic modifiers to mix with grout that makes them more durable, but I have had nothing but problems with these liquids when working with colored grouts.

Portland cement is an unstable chemical compound in the grout bag. It becomes stable once it unites with water molecules. It can get those from water vapor in the air or from liquid water that is mixed with the powder. This is why bags of Portland cement or grout are often placed in special bags with plastic liners. The plastic blocks the movement of water toward the dry unstable powder.

If you inspect the leftover grout in your possession, it should be a fine powder with no lumps or clumps. The presence of small, hard lumps or clumping means the grout may have started to mix with water vapor. Clumps or lumps mean the grout is bad or is going bad. But if the grout appears like a bag of fresh baking flour, then it is my opinion the grout is perfect. When you mix grout with water, it is important to add just the right amount. This is no different than making cake or pancake batter. Add too much cooking oil and water to cake and pancake mix and you get a runny batter that will not produce the desired foodstuff. The same is true with grout. Add too much water as you mix and the grout will never get as hard as grout mixed properly.
The proper consistency for grout is like that of a thick cake batter. The grout, once mixed, should readily stick to the end of a putty knife. When you grab a glob of grout from the mixing bucket, it should not droop off of the putty knife. If the grout is runny and can be poured like a milkshake, too much water has been added. You can fix the problem by adding more powdered grout and blending the mixture until the grout thickens.
This is why I always only mix part of a bag of grout at one time. I always want to have extra powdered grout in case I add too much water to the original batch. Furthermore, you only want to mix as much grout as you can apply to the tile in 30 minutes.
The installer could have also ruined the grout after it was mixed perfectly. He could have re-tempered the grout by adding water to it as it was getting hard in the bucket. This, in my opinion, should never be done. The added water breaks apart the crystalline chemical bonds that are forming as the grout transforms from a plastic substance to man-made rock.
Finally, the installer could have issued a death sentence to your grout as he was finishing the joints. If he used a sponge that contained too much water, the water could have diluted the grout while it was hardening between the individual pieces of tile. The sponge used to strike and finish the grout joints must have all excess water squeezed from it before it touches the grout between the tile.
It helps to cure grout in places that have low humidity. Parts of the West and Southwest have very low relative humidity, and the water in wet grout can evaporate too quickly. When this happens, the grout can lose strength. The best way to cure grout if the humidity is low, is to cover the freshly-grouted tiles with damp white-paper towels. The paper towels will readily stick to the wall tile. The next step is to mist the paper towels with clean water every hour or so to ensure they stay damp.
It also helps to run a humidifier in the tiled area for 48 hours. This water vapor helps the grout gain every bit of strength possible. It takes days for the grout to achieve its final strength and the first few days of the process are critical. If you keep the grout slightly damp for 48 hours after it is installed, it should last a lifetime.

Tiles caving inwards (in a shower)

install a one-piece vapor barrier on the wall studs before installing the ceramic tile backer board. It is important for this plastic to lap over the tub or shower-base flange. This membrane protects the wood wall studs from getting wet in the event of a catastrophic leak. Be sure you tuck the vapor barrier membrane into the corners tightly as you install it.

The wall studs are then covered with a cementitious or totally waterproof gypsum-based backerboard. These products are often the exact same thickness as regular drywall. They are often easy to handle and cut. Simply follow the written instructions that come with them as to the proper fasteners to use. Some allow you to use hot-dipped galvanized nails and others require screws.

I prefer to hold these backerboards up from the tub or shower deck about three-sixteenths of an inch. I do the same at corners and horizontal seams. After the backerboard is installed, I then vacuum up any dust and caulk the gaps with pure silicone caulk. Some written instructions will also tell you to tape the joints with a special tape and thinset mortar. If you do this, you need to be really careful about not creating a hump at any of the corners or horizontal seams. If there is a hump in the wall, you will discover the ceramic tile will rock back and forth at these high spots on the wall.

The first row of tile must be perfectly level. I achieve this by installing the second row of tile first. I nail a straight board to the wall that acts as a ledge for the tile to rest on as subsequent rows of tile are added. Once the mastic or thinset is firm, I remove the boards and install the missing row of tile just above the tub or shower.


The tools required to install a ceramic tile shower are minimal. You can purchase a tile cutter, a rod saw, mastic or thinset trowel and grout float for very little money. The key is to take your time making sure the wall studs are plumb and in the same plane. With the walls straight and plumb, the ceramic tile installs very easily with minimal effort.

The joint between the first row of tile and the tub or shower should not be grouted. That joint should be filled with a high-quality caulk. As you grout, you will get grout into this joint. Don't fret as you can scrape this grout out of the joint with a toothpick as you go or with a putty knife as soon as you sponge the grout lines. Wait a day for the grout to cure before you caulk the joint.

Tile staining









Although ceremic tiles may be very hardy and resistant to chemicals and water, they, in some cases, may be prone to staining. Accidentally staining or on purpose staining it is very hard to get anything to stick to ceramic tiles. Any paint even epoxy will wear off and look shabby very quickly.

One way to distract people from the plain white is to take out tiles in a pattern and replace them with some colorful tiles that will draw people's attention from the main color. You can take out those tiles by using a hand grout saw to take off the grout surrounding the tiles you want to remove. Then smash those tiles in the center with a pointed centerpunch and a small hammer. Work your way out toward the edges of the smashed tile until you have cleared their entire square. That is where you are going to cement-in and grout the new colorful ones. It is time consuming but it will upgrade the floor and make people forget the basic off-white.

Stains can be removed using stain cleaning.

When cleaning ceramic tile, do not abrasive scouring powder. They will scratch and dull the shine on the ceramic tile surface. Unless your cleaning products label states specifically that it is safe for a tile surface, so not use it.

For severely discolored and dirty tile and grout, where cleaning with detergent will not work, use a 50/50 cleaning solution of bleach and water to remove any dirt that is present.

If cleaning does not work, there is always the alternative solution to change the tile.
